What is Music Therapy

Music therapy is a research-based allied health profession and practice, in which music is used within a therapeutic relationship to improve a person’s health and wellbeing. It is used to support various emotional, psychological, cognitive, physical, and developmental goals, in a fun and engaging way.

Incorporating music into the therapeutic space has been proven to demonstrate immense positive changes for a wide variety of populations. Session activities change depending on the needs of the participant, but can involve songwriting, improvising, creating playlists, making music with others, or simply listening to music.

These activities have far-reaching effects, including physiological effects such as decreased heart rate, increased dopamine and serotonin production, and developmental support, and psychosocial effects such as increased interpersonal skills, deeper self-awareness and understanding, and reduced anxiety and stress. They also create powerful moments for self-expression, ownership, mastery, pride, belonging, and accomplishment
